Joined the CCC after running away from home at 13, joined the Navy at 16 with forged documents, was present at Pearl Harbor (his first sunken ship), met up with his younger brother Leroy by accident while piloting an inter island transport boat in the Pacific. Survived a number of shipwrecks.
